Smallpox

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 4 months ago

1.Virus Name( Scientific):

  • Variola Major/Minor

2.Disease or disorder caused by virus:

  • Smallpox

3.Description of virus structure:

4.How is virus transmitted?

  • Transmitted primarily through prolonged social contact or direct contact with infected fluids or contaminated objects.

5.How can transmission be prevented?

  • to prevent transmissions, keep infected person isolated and do not sleep in same bedding, or come in contact with patient.

6.Describe the type of body cells attacked:

  • contracted when it comes in contact with throat or respiratory mucosa( moist skin lining)

7.What are the symptoms of infection?:

  • symptoms include fever, feeling of bodily discomfort, headache, severe fatigue, severe backpain, sometimes vomitting, diarrhea or both.

8.How does the body defend itself?:

  • body produces heat, which causes fever to try to fight off the virus. Also, it tries to get rid of the virus by diarrhea and vomitting.

9.Are there any treatments/vaccines?:

  • treatments eases the symptoms. It includes replacing lost fluids from fever, and skin breakdown. Antibiotics may be needed for secondary skin infections. The infected person is kept in isolation for 7 to 17 days or until the scabs fall off.

10.Iinteresting facts:

  • only virus that do not need a cell's nucleus to replicate inside the cell
  • only affects human; neither could animals or insects transmit the virus from one human to another
  • no cure was ever discovered- only way is for the disease to die off by its own
  • outcome of smallpox is either death or recovery
  • death from smallpox ranged as high as 35% of those who are infected

Smallpox

  • Smallpox is a disease caused by the virus Variola major or Viorla minor
  • Small pox is a disease caused by the above viruses
  • The virus particle is a large oval shaped cell:

  • It contains two strands of DNA that replicates in the cytoplasm.
  • Smallpox is highly contagious
  • Transmitted through social or direct contact with body fluids or contaminated objects
  • Very rarely, it can also be transmitted through the air
  • Only humans can get the disease
  • Usually transmitted into people's lungs
  • There is a vaccine that prevents Smallpox
  • Given regularly in North America a few decades ago
  • Stays in body for 3-5 years
  • Many people still get vaccined once or more in their lifetime
  • No contact with those infected may help a small bit
  • The virus usually affects the skin cells, and cause "pimples" called macules
  • The symptoms for smallpox include:
  • Fever, headache, severe fatigue, back pain, some vomitting, diarrhea that leads to:
  • Red spots appearing, scabs forming on face, then on hands, and slowly all over the body
  • The scabs are called macules, they erupt and skin breaks off the flesh
  • Leaves deep pitted scars that are usually permanent
  • Smallpox cannot be prevented by the body
  • The body tries to get rid of it through heat of fever, or vomit and even diaherea
  • But if one has a strong Immune System, it may give a greater chance of survival
  • Vaccine prevents body against smallpox
  • Has a 95% chance of prevention
  • Developes immunity for body against Smallpox
  • No cure, but vaccine can slow or stop the progress of smallpox of those already infected
  • Interesting Facts:
  • Disease has been "extinct" for over 30 years
  • Governments are afraid of it being used for bioterriosm, for it is highly deadly and contagious
  • Vaccines stay in body for up to 75 years, so naturally, the virus probably will not appear in humans again
  • There is a 30% death rate, and said to have killed up to 450-500million people in the Mid 1900's (The time it was most common)
  • Smallpox victims usually do not survive one month, unless it is no longer present

1) Variola Vera

2)Small Pox

3)

4) 4)Virus is transmitted by social contact or direct contact with infected body fluids or contaminated objects like bedding or clothes.

5) The virus can be prevented by a vaccine. If taken before exposure, it can protect about 95% of people from getting small pox. Innoculation is also effective.

6) Boddy cells that are attaked by small pox are the Skin Cells.

7) Symptoms are influenza and the common cold: fevers, muscle pain, stomach aches ect. Also other symptoms are pimples that erupt first in mouth and then on arms and hands and later the rest of the body.

8) The body can defend itself by producing heat.(fevers, vomiting,)

9) There is a vaccine, but it doesnt completely cure the virus.

10) INTERESTING FACTS:

>Smallpox is responsibile for 300-500 million deaths in the 20th century

>Some believe that the death of 90-95% of the native populations of the new world was caused by smallpox.

>Long term characteristics of survivors are skin scars.

>Smallpox is highly contagious although less so that other infectious diseases.

>Smallpox is used in biochemical warfare.

Smallpox

1)The scientific names are Variola major and Variola minor.

2)The smallpox disease is caused by a virus.

3)A virus structure has about two hundred genes in its DNA strand.

4)The virus is transmitted by touching the infected areas called skin lesions, coughing and sneezing anything the infected person touches. You usually get it by breathing it in and it goes in your bloodstream.

5)I think you should stay away from the infected person and don't touch anything they touch.

6)The type of cells attracted while having smallpox are host cells in the human body.

7)Some symtoms are chills, headache, backache, nausea, vomiting, fever and red spots on the skin that turn into puslike blisters.

8)The body defends itself by dirrehea and your body produces heat so you get cold and get a fever.

9)There are no vaccinations and there is no cure. The only treatment is to let your body fight it by itself.

10)          Interesting Facts

  • smallpox is believed to have appeared at the time of the first agricultural settlements in northeastern Africa, around 10,000 BC.
  • World Health Organization(WHO) recommended that all smallpox viruses in the world be destroyed except for samples in the centre for disease control in Atlanta, Georgia and the lab in Russia but some people believed that other countries used this as a biolgiocal weapon.
  • Dr Edward Jenner was a country doctor in England and he first discovered smallpox in the late 1700's
  • In 1796 a British doctor observed that woemn who milked cowsfor a living often got a skin infection called cowpox but they were immune to smallpox so he did an experiment on an 18 year old boy. He scratched the boys arm with pus from the cowpox sore and six weeks later he scratched the boys arm with pus from the smallpox and the boy didn't  get sick.
  • the vaccine is NOT live smallpox vaccine.
